The Honey Thief

Venus and Cupid as Honey Thief, Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1527. The subject is based ultimately on the nineteenth idyll of Theocritus, which tells of Cupid being stung by bees, whose hive he raided in search of honey, and then complaining to Venus of the great pain inflicted by such small creatures. Venus, amused, likened Cupid to the bees, remarking that he, too, is small and, as the god of love, also a bringer of great pain. Gin · Curry Leaf · Apricot Marmalade · Lemon · Honeycomb

HK$128

Blueberry

Blueberry, Joan Mitchell, 1969. With its vibrant palette of warm golden colors and a surface infused with painterly passion, Joan Mitchell’s luxurious canvas, Blueberry, belongs to a group of significant works which demonstrate the artist's unrivaled skill at producing paintings which evoke the rich emotions of nature and landscape. Cream Cheese Fat Washed Rum · Housemade Blueberry Shrub · Cassis · Salted Cheese Foam

HK$128

Almond Blossom

Large blossom branches like this against a blue sky were one of Van Gogh’s favourite subjects. Almond trees flower early in the spring making them a symbol of new life. The painting was a gift for his brother Theo and sister-in-law Jo, who had just had a baby son, Vincent Willem. In the letter announcing the new arrival, Theo wrote: ‘‘As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and as courageous as you.’’ Aged Rum · Housemade Spiced Almond Cordial · Lime · Pineapple

HK$128

Irises

Van Gogh painted this still life in the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy. For him, the painting was mainly a study in colour. He set out to achieve a powerful colour contrast. By placing the purple flowers against a yellow background, he made the decorative forms stand out even more strongly. The irises were originally purple. But as the red pigment has faded, thus, it turned blue. Housemade Vermouth · Chardonnay · Elderflower · Calamansi Peel · Blackcurrant

HK$128

The Basket of Apples

The painting rejected naturalistic representation in favor of distorting objects to create multiple perspectives. It has been described as a balanced composition due to its unbalanced parts; the tilted bottle, the incline of the basket, and the foreshortened lines of the cookies mesh with the lines of the tablecloth. Vodka · Granny Smith · Housemade Cinnamon Syrup · Lemongrass · Lemon

HK$128

The Gin Shop

Depicting a gin-shop of the time and it shows a drunk stumbling against the counter next to his inebriated children, and a mother force-feeding her baby gin instead of milk. In a characteristic Cruikshank visualisation of a pun, they stand in a gin-trap. The apparently young lady serving them is in fact a skeleton holding a mask. It in fact depicts the issue with ‘‘Gin Craze’’ that began in the 1730s. The average consumption per Londoner was equivalent to 2 pints per week. Rhubarb Gin · Tonic · Salty Plum Apple Cider Foam

HK$128

The Whisky Still

This painting was produced after Wilkie’s visit to Ireland in 1835. He compared Ireland to Spain as a picturesque, wild and romantic place, and described the ‘primeval simplicity of the peasants’. He also said that Ireland provided him with ‘perfectly new and untouched’ material for inspiration. This sketch shows a young boy pouring the distilled spirit into a barrel using a funnel. In the final painting Wilkie changed the child into a girl, wearing a scarlet red skirt. Irish Whisky · Housemade Airplane Olives Cordial · Lapsang Tea · Calamansi · Ginger Ale

HK$128

The Potato Eaters

The painting had to depict the harsh reality of country life, so he gave the peasants coarse faces and bony, working hands. He wanted to show in this way that they ‘have tilled the earth themselves with these hands they are putting in the dish...that they have thus honestly earned their food’. Gin · Beetroot · Shiitake Mushroom · Campari · Sweet Vermouth

HK$128

Wheatfield with a Reaper

This painting depicting a reaper in a sun-drenched wheatfield was painted in Saint-Rémy. In the wake of several mental crises, Van Gogh had decided to commit himself to the hospital in April 1889. Van Gogh wrote about the meaning of this painting: ‘‘A reaper, the study is all yellow, terribly thickly impasted, but the subject was beautiful and simple. I then saw in this reaper and saw the image of death in it, in this sense that humanity would be the wheat being reaped.’’ Tequila · Pink Guava · Agave · Kaffir Lime Leaf · Lager Beer

HK$128

Great Piece of Turf

The Great Piece of Turf is a watercolor painting by Albrecht Dürer created at his Nuremberg workshop in 1503. It is a study of a seemingly unordered group of wild plants, including dandelion and greater plantain. The work is considered one of the masterpieces of Dürer’s realistic nature studies. Gin · Housemade Basil Cordial · Cucumber · Cumin Seed · Pink Pepper

HK$128

Birth of Venus

It depicts the moment when, having emerged from the sea in a shell, Venus lands at Paphos in Cyprus. She is attended by two winds who blow her towards the shore, while a nymph is poised to wrap a cloak, decorated with spring flowers, around Venus to cover her nudity. Seaweed Vodka · Spiced Tomato · Plum Wine · Chutney
